The Local Bar The Home of Great Music
Welcome to The Local Bar
The Local Bar in Dungarvan square is one of the best known traditional music Bars in the area. It is a haven for those who love to play and those who love to listen to traditional Irish music. The Local is renowned for its atmosphere and music sessions, and attracts the best performers local and afar, in traditional and folk music.
The Local opened its door for the first time on the 25th of November 1999. The building had been in the Byrne family since the early 1960’s when Helena’s father, Johnny bought it. Back then it was then called Cooneys Pub. The building was then turned into an Electrical business, but Johnny renewed the liquor licence every year for £200. There was always a display of bottled beers and spirits in the Electrical shop, showing the public that there was indeed a licence on the premises.
An interesting fact is that is somebody requested a pint of Guinness in the shop, Johnny or his wife Lenore would have to oblige and get the the pint for the customer.
In 1999, Johnny and Lenore decided to retire from the retail world, so Helena and her brother John decided to give the Pub business a go. In 2004 Helena and her husband Donnchadh bought John’s share of the business, and continue to run The Local to this day.
The Local is very well supported by the people of Dungarvan and its environs, and has gained a great reputation for Food, Music, GAA and Craic.
